FETC 2007

If you haven't read the Time Article "How to Bring our Schools out of the 20th Century" - it is very interesting and very necessary reading...

Went to the Florida Educational Technology Conference last week and learned much from both "experts" and other teachers. Thought I'd compile some links and learnings here...

Kathy Schrock did a
presentation on Web 2.0 . Here you will find many of web 2.0 applications. What is Web 2.0? Basically, Web 2.0 is a combination of many online "applications" that people are using to collaborate and communicate: blogs, wikis, podcasts, vodcasts, social bookmarking, collaborative writing/spreadsheets (Google docs and spreadsheets), RSS so that all of this can come to you as changes and additions are made. Allows many users to contribute to create a presence online and to stay connected and share ideas and help each other learn. Did you know there are about 300 social "tools" online today? More coming all the time.... leading to Web 3.0!

Google for Educators has some great online, web 2.0 applications and is adding more all the time!

Arnie Abrams presentation "
Multimedia Magic: Improving Learning through Digital Media" was very good - check out the links on the last page!

There is a great elementary science program online that is inquiry-based and looks exceptional and very engaging for students -
GALAXY Classroom. Saw a demo of one of their videos and actually got to participate in one of their hands-on experiments.

Alan November, as always, challenged us to think. His topic this year was "Preparing Students to Succeed in a Global Economy." His blog and podcasts can be found at
www.novemberlearning.com

Since I incorporate visual literacy into my digital storytelling and digital video/camera classes, I usually use a book called "Visual Literacy: See to Learn" - I was excited to attend the session by the book's author,
Lynell Burmark. She showed a powerpoint with her presentation, but most of the powerpoint was photos - not words, not hundreds of bullet points! The "story" came from her. She talked about Technology and Differentiated Instruction - wish I could share with you the entire presentation but check out some of the links on her handout.

John Kuglin speaks at many of the tech conferences. This year, his presentation was "21st Century Learning - 21st Century Technologies." He is now the technology director for Eagle Co. Schools in Colorado. Lots of good resources can be found at his
website. John says every teacher needs a "digital presence" - webpage, blog, or eboard. He also said every computer in the school should have answers.com installed - includes encyclopedia, thesaurus, dictionary, and 1-click answers. He has powerpoint presentations on his website about cyber bullying and online predators that anyone can use with students, teachers, parents, and community members.

One of the best sessions I attended was "Literacy Instruction and Podcasts: Partners in our Reading Classrooms!" presented by
Reading First Professional Development at the University of Central Florida. They have PD streaming videos and audiocasts. Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format.

I attended the session Tablets for Teachers and found a few resources: InkArt - free download from Microsoft - also the education pack, experience pack, and power toys are all free from MS.
